This past weekend, I had the joy of tagging along for my daughter’s Girl Scout camping trip to Penrose Point State Park in Washington. We made it a true family adventure by bringing my son and two of his friends along as well—because the more, the merrier when it comes to camping fun!
Penrose turned out to be the perfect spot for a group getaway. Whether you’re camping with a troop, family, or just friends, it has that rare mix of wilderness beauty and convenient amenities that make the whole experience more enjoyable.
Campsites & Amenities
The campsites here are fantastic—spacious enough to comfortably fit two tents at most sites, and with plenty of room for kids to run around. For larger groups like ours, they even offer group camping sites (ideal for Girl Scout troops or family reunions).
Amenities include:
🚽 Flushing toilets (always a plus!)
🚿 Hot showers
♻ Can & plastic recycling stations
🛶 Easy access to the water for kayaking or paddleboarding
It feels wonderfully secluded—surrounded by tall trees and quiet shoreline—but you’re still just minutes from a grocery store in case you forgot something (like marshmallows… guilty!).
Waterfront Fun & Trails
With trails just steps from the water, the kids never ran out of things to do. During low tide, my daughter, her troop friends, my son, and his buddies loved heading out to explore. They found crabs, shells, and even a few starfish, each discovery sparking new excitement.
And for those who love paddling, the calm waters are perfect for launching a kayak or paddleboard—just make sure to keep an eye on the tide schedule for the best experience.
Close to Home, Far from Stress
Located about 40 minutes from Gig Harbor, Penrose Point State Park is an easy drive for a weekend escape—or even just a day trip.
Whether you’re there for hiking, camping, or simply watching kids have the time of their lives exploring the outdoors, Penrose offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
