Last Saturday, Downtown Gig Harbor hosted one of my favorite community events: Shop the Harbor. If you’ve never been, picture the most walkable, scenic street in town lined with small businesses—some you know well and others you’ve probably walked past a dozen times without ever stepping inside (guilty).
You can buy a ticket for perks like a swag bag and special deals, or you can just show up and soak in the day. Either way, it’s a perfect excuse to wander, support local shops, and spend time with friends. The weather even cooperated… which feels like winning the lottery in November.
But this year, something extra special happened.
One of the downtown shops opened part of their space for a “Mini Market,” giving local kids the chance to set up a table and sell their handmade crafts. Honestly, what a brilliant idea—encouraging creativity, confidence, and a little early entrepreneurship.
My daughter Jamie signed up to sell her gnomes. Yes, gnomes. She’s been making them for months for friends, teachers, and coaches, and until recently I had no idea gnomes were even “a thing.” But apparently they absolutely are.
Watching her run her own booth, greet people, and handle her sales all by herself… I won’t lie, it was one of those proud dad moments. She put herself out there, had fun, and even made some real sales. Not a bad Saturday for a kid—or a parent.
Events like Shop the Harbor are exactly why Gig Harbor feels like such a special place. Local businesses thrive, neighbors come together, and sometimes your kid surprises you in the best way possible.
